Financial District property, the original Los Angeles headquarters of the Bank of Italy, the precursor to Bank of America, had languished for more than a decade as a run-down eyesore under its pervious owner, the Chetrit Group. Sydell has engaged in an extensive renovation of the building on the northwest corner of Seventh and Olive streets.
There will be five food and drinks options in the hotel, including a mezzanine-level dining area and a rooftop cocktail bar. Jacques Garcia handled renovation designs and chef Daniel Humm and Will Guidara are spearheading the dining options. This also marks Sydell’s second Downtown project, following the opening of the Freehand Hotel at 416 W. Reservations and information are at thenomadhotel. By Tom Fassbender, Jon Regardie, Nicholas Slayton and Sean P. DTLA – A decade ago, the Downtown Los Angeles development scene was barely moving. The residential revolution that ignited in 2000 had come to a close as the Great Recession pummeled lending markets.
DTLA – The transformation of Downtown Los Angeles is no longer a subject of fascination solely for the city: The national and even the international press has jumped on the bandwagon, with numerous articles on the investment pouring into the area, and the residential, cultural and culinary rebirth. DTLA – These days one hears occasional warnings that the long-running bull market is coming to a close, that the national economy could shift into recession and sky-high prices will fall. DTLA – Maybe it’s the turbo-charged national economy. Maybe it’s the Los Angeles housing shortage that has caused both rents and home sale prices to spike. Maybe it’s the pressure developers face of trying to launch a project before voters cast ballots on Measure S in March.

Reservations to dine at The Mezzanine officially go up right this very second, with the first openings starting on Sunday, January 21.
Moving forward, reservations will be available for The Mezzanine every 28 days in advance, beginning at 10 a. Interested diners can call the property today at 213-314-0000, or head here. In the works for three years now, the new space in the former Bank of Italy building at Giannini Place is outfitted with 241 rooms and suites, 10,000 square feet of event space, a rooftop pool, a coffee bar and an all-day café, all of which gives a nod to the building’s Italian roots. Guests will be greeted to a fully-restored gold and blue ceiling in the lobby. For the city’s culinary enthusiasts, the pièce de résistance is the formal restaurant located on the Mezzanine. Here, executive chef Chris Flint helms the kitchen, hailing from the Big Apple where he was most recently chef de cuisine at Humm and Guidara’s three-Michelin-starred Eleven Madison Park. For more casual dining, head to the Giannini Bar located off the lobby, which will have bar snacks and cocktails, craft beers and wines available by beverage director Leo Robitschek. Aside from being in a new city, there are a few other firsts for the Make It Nice team, like the Venetian-inspired coffee bar located in the lobby showcasing pastries by chefs Mark Welker and Brad Ray. We’ve served some of them in New York, but now in Los Angeles we can expand the offerings even more and I’m very excited.
